About Rosh Hashanah Seders:

At our Hadassah meeting, one member spoke about Rosh Hashanah customs. I was surprised to hear about the rising popularity of Rosh Hashanah Seders. So I went on an Internet hunt to find Seder services for myself and you to enjoy.

The Rosh Hashanah Seder is conducted at the beginning of the Rosh Hashanah evening meal. The Seders guide families through blessings that add meaning to the holiday dinner.

The growing popularity of Rosh Hashanah Seders may be due to the ability of physical expression to deepen the intent of prayers as well as to the trend of practicing Judaism more in homes rather than synagogues.

Noam Zion is famous for helping many of us enjoy meaningful Passovers via his Haggadah, A Different Night. Prayers are included for the following food: dates, pomegranate, apple with honey, gourd, black-eyed peas, leek, beet, fish, and lastly meat from the head of a fish, fowl, or sheep. The service offers sketchy explanations for why these foods have symbolic meaning.

Rosh Hashanah Seders generally include blessings of symbolic foods that relate either to the taste, name or shape of the food. This Seder site lists symbolic foods eaten at the beginning of Rosh Hashana evening meals. While specific blessings are not included, the symbolic meaning of each food is well explained.
