Question: Is the mezuzah considered to be a means of protection for a family or home?

Dear Rabbi Lerner,
Does Conservative Judaism view the mezuzah as a means of protection for a family or home?
Thank you, JB

Answer: Dear JB,

The Conservative Movement, similar to most Jews, hold multiple opinions about the purpose or role of the mezuzah.

The term "Guardian of the Doors of Israel" does appear on the back of the parchment. There are clearly some Jews who believe in it literally.

But there are also additional dimensions to the meaning of "protection."

Consider that a Jew leaving the home, pauses to kiss or recognize the mezuzah and its contents - they will perhaps be protected against world - the emotional, intellectual harm if not the physical dangers.

When reminded of our Jewish heritage, the mezuzah reminds us of who can be, what we can do to improve the world for one and all.

Best wishes,
Rabbi Dov
