Question: Are Jews required to kiss the mezuzah when entering a room?
Answer: I am delighted that you are observing the mitzvah of mezuzot, and the question of showing respect for a mezuzah is a good one.
Most do indeed touch the mezuzah and then kiss their fingers, and yes it may look strange to others who are unfamiliar with the custom. It is an opportunity to share with them how important it is that we remember to fulfill God's commandments, coming and going, for family and business, maintaining integrity and honesty throughout our lives.
On the other hand, I believe that I was taught that the Vilna Gaon didn't kiss the Torah or mezuzah because he felt that it was too much like idolatry. We should respect the content of the teaching, not the physical repository of the teach - that was the gist of his opinion.
I would urge that at the least you pause and look at the mezuzah, coming and going, reflecting on its meaning as you go in and out. And, perhaps in time, you'll feel less awkward about actually kissing it, knowing that it is a custom, and it is not a law.
