Question: Do Jews believe in concepts such as Satan, Devil and Hell?

Dear Rabbi Enkin,
Do Jews believe in Satan and Hell?
Thank you, Erica

Answer: Dear Erica,

In Judaism, Satan is viewed as the being or angel which ignites our evil inclinations to sin. He also represents all evil and tries to bring trouble into the world and upon the Jewish people.

Jewish tradition does not subscribe to an independent, and certainly not, a permanent place of punishment, known as Hell. We don't believe in eternal punishment. Judaism teaches that after someone dies, the soul goes through an 11 month 'cleansing' process in order to prepare it for it's place in Heaven.

Hope this helps!
