Dear Rabbi Enkin,
We moved into a new apartment. I know we hang mezuzahs on every door except bathrooms doors. But do we hang a mezuzah on closet doors off a hallway or on a maid's door whose room is within the kitchen? Also, which way should the mezuzah point?
Thanks, Lisa (Panama City, Rep. of Panama)
As a general rule one does not need to put mezuzas on closets, though it is very difficult to issue a ruling without seeing the place in question. A storage place that is exceptionally large space is required to have a mezuza. If it is on the "spacious" side, I recommend placing a mezuza -- though no blessing is to be recited when doing so.
The maid's room should also have a mezuza and a blessing is to be recited when putting it up. (because the maid's room is truly yours -- you're just letting the maid 'borrow' it).
