Question: How can I replace an old mezuzah with a new one? How do I hang the mezuzah?

Dear Rabbi Enkin,
Is there any special procedure for removing an old mezuzzah and replacing it with a new one? What side of the doorframe is it supposed to be on, and how is it supposed to be slanted?
Thank you, Susan

Answer: Dear Susan,

When you replace an old mezuza you should give it in to a Sofer, a scribe, to be checked in order to see if it is still kosher. If it is still kosher, you should consider keeping it! If it is ruled not kosher then it must be disposed of in a "genizah". Your rabbi/scribe will be able to take care of this for you.

A mezuza should be placed on the right side of the doorpost, tilted slightly towards the entrance of the room.

The mitzva of mezuza is a tremendous mitzva! Be sure to have kosher mezuzot on all your doorposts!

Hope this helps!
