Yochanan Ben Zakai Synagogue in Jerusalem's Old City
Lisa Katz
Yochanan Ben Zakai Synagogue, located in Jerusalem's Old City, was built in the 16th century. Israel's chief rabbis have been inaugurated here since 1840. According to tradition, Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakai's Beth Midrash (House of Study) was located here during the Second Temple period (1st century). A shofar and jar of oil are stored on a high shelf in the synagoge, ready to be used when the Messiah comes.
