Question: With no rabbi available, where can I find content for an unveiling ceremony?

Dear Rabbi,
My husband died and we would like to have an unveiling ceremony soon. Where could I find the materials used to honor him in this way. We live in a small town without a Rabbi.
Thank you, Sharon

Answer: Dear Sharon,

Thank you for writing, and I am very sorry for your loss. I hope that memories of times shared in health and in joy have brought you comfort.

While a Rabbi isn't necessary for an unveiling, sometimes a Rabbi can help guide you through the customs of an unveiling.

How far is it to reach the closest Rabbi and have faxes of the prayers and readings? This would be the best way.

Secondly, could one of your family meet with their Rabbi for a copy of the prayers and readings that they could bring to the unveiling and help conduct the ceremony.

Lastly, does your town have a synagogue? Most prayerbooks have a section for a memorial service and these are the classic readings and prayers. In addition, your synagogue should be able to contact the national office of their movement for copies of the materials.

Best Wishes,
Rabbi Dov
