Question: Who should remove the cloth during an unveiling ceremony?

Dear Rabbi,
During my mother's unveiling, who should take the cloth off of the stone? My step-dad will not be attending the ceremony, so will it be appropiate for my mother's only two daughters - myself and my sister - to remove the cloth?
Thank you, Wendy

Answer: Dear Wendy,

Please accept my sincerest condolences on the loss of your mother.

There is no protocol in Jewish tradition concerning who removes the cloth during an unveiling ceremony. It is a symbolic act that can be shared. The cloth can be removed by the children or grandchildren as you see fit.

Best wishes and may your family come together soon and often for occasions of joy in the future.

Best Wishes,
Rabbi Dov
