Can a Gentile use a Yahrzeit memorial candle as an ordinary candle?

Question: Can a Gentile use a Yahrzeit memorial candle as an ordinary candle?

Dear Rabbi,
Is it sacrilegious for a Gentile to light a Jewish Yahrzeit Memorial candle? And is it sacrilegious to use a Yahrzeit candle as an ordinary candle?
Sincerely, Paul

Answer: Dear Paul,

A 24 hour "Yartzeit" candle has no inherent sanctity or meaning. As such, it may be used for any purpose.

That being said, however, since yartzeit candles have become identified with mourning and remembrance, often triggering inner emotions, using them for other purposes may be unbecoming, and perhaps even perceived by some as insulting.

Best wishes,
