Dedication
While the word "Hanukkah" has the same core as the word "chinuch" which means education, it actually means dedication and refers to the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem.
According to the Book of Maccabees, the Assyrians placed Greek symbols and
statues in the Temple and defiled the oil which was used for Temple's menorah.
After driving the Assyrians out of Judea, the Maccabees cleansed the Temple and
purified the oil. On the 25th day of the Hebrew month of
Kislev in 164 BCE, the Holy Temple in Jerusalem was rededicated to the one
God.
