Question

I have a question I hope you can answer. When I light the yarzheit candle in memory of my father, is there a special prayer to be said? Thank you in advance.

Answer

While lighting the memorial candles there is no special prayer. However, some have the custom to fast during the day of the Yahrzeit - (source: "Code of Jewish Law" O.C. 568:6). Others, in lieu of fasting, recite some chapters in Psalms. Suggested chapters - 121, 130, 142. It is also recommended to give charity i the merit of the deceased.

With blessings from Jerusalem,
