Question

If the name of the deceased is to appear in both Hebrew and Roman letters on the tombstone, in which order should they appear? Does the Hebrew name dispense with the surname?

Answer

The Hebrew name of the deceased is customarilly engraved first. The Hebrew name appears only as: e.g. "Yitzchak Ben Avraham" (Yitzchak the son of Avraham); without the family name (being that the family name is already mentioned in the Roman letters).

However, some do engrave the family name in Hebrew as well - e.g. - "Yitchak Ben Avraham Weiss. With blessings from Jerusalem,
