Question

I am pregnant with my second child. My father passed away in May, and his Hebrew name and that of my father-in-law, who is still living, are the same.  My mother would like me to name this baby after my father; is there any way I can do this?

Answer

Sefardi Jews do not hesitate to give a name, which is the same as a living grandfather - based on Talmud Shabbat 134a. Askenazi Jews, however, do not give the same name. What they can do is change the name slightly, such as by changing the name Menachem to Nachum or Shalom to Shlomo, etc.
