Question

Thank you very much for your helpful service. I have a question. I know that Judaism is transmitted through the mother. Does it follow that I can get married as an Orthodox Jew, even if my mother has not done so, so long as I am Orthodox through the matrimonial line? For instance, suppose I can produce a ketubah from my mother's mother, but not from my mother herself. Is this enough to allow me to marry Orthodox?

The reason I ask is that I've heard some Orthodox Rabbis require a ketubah from the bride's and groom's parents, and I was confused about this.

Answer

Proving the Jewishness of your mother's mother should be sufficient to prove your own Jewishness.

With blessings from Jerusalem,
