Question

My son is 3 years old. His godmother used to be married to my brother, but they are now divorced. She has no contact with my son at all and he no longer remembers her. Is it possible to officially name someone else his godmother, and if so how?

Answer

In Judaism, the one who holds the baby boy during his circumcision, is often referred to as "godfather." But this is not similar to the "Godfather" relationship in Christianity.

In Judaism, it is the parents and grandparents who are responsible for the child's ethical development. Later on, when the child grows older it is the rabbi and teacher, who are also involved in the moral teaching of the child.

You can certainly encourage any of your friends and relatives to help in the role of providing moral guidance to the child.

With blessings from Jerusalem,
