Question

We are 8 months pregnant with our second daughter. We currently don't have anyone we feel we want to name the baby after who has passed away. Our parents feel we should name the baby after a relative, but we don't feel any were close to us or significant in our lives. 1. Can we wait until one of our grandmothers pass away and name the baby a few years down the road with a Hebrew name after them? 2. Should a name be after a family member to please your parents or after someone you feel was significant to you?

Answer

1. Names are given within days after birth. You should not wait years before giving a name.

2. In such matters a person does not have to consider his parents' wish, if he opposes it strongly and has good reason to object - (source: "Code of Jewish Law" Y.D. 240:25).
