Question

We are preparing to have an unveiling for our father who passed away on January 29th this past year. Is it customary to have it on exactly the one year anniversary of death, or the anniversary of the burial, or on the first Sunday before or following one of those. Can you help?

Answer

The unveiling and dedication of a memorial stone can be done as early as at the end of shiva, at the end of the first 30 days (Sefardim) and at the end of a year (Ashkenazim). The date does not have to be exact. If based on the above, the date can be made to fit the schedules of the family members, the weather and seasons of the year.

Best Wishes,

Rabbi Barry Dov Lerner
