Question

Can you outline the service for burying sacred Jewish documents? How different is the service to a graveside service for a person?

Answer

The service for burying Jewish sacred documents is best arranged with the Rabbi of your congregation.

I've conducted several such services, using a grave in the synagogue area in the cemetery. The service was similar to that of burying a person - psalms, readings, even a eulogy, etc. The service was an opportunity for students to come to the cemetery to perform the service and thereafter to visit their own family plots, read the monuments, remember relationships, etc. It was a positive experience and eased the potential trauma for young people when they would have to ultimately perform the mitzvah of burial of family and friends.

Best Wishes,

Rabbi Barry Dov Lerner
