Question

My father died last year. I have ordered a stone for the unveiling, but I cannot find his Hebrew name anywhere. Please help if you can.

Answer

Here are some helpful hints for finding the Hebrew name of a decesased loved one.

Contact the funeral home. They may have the name, or they may know the person who officiated at the funeral and has his name in the records.

Your father's Hebrew name should be on their monument - check with the cemetery or visit the grave and rub the stone.

Was anyone in the family named for your father? This is often a hint of the Hebrew name.

Lastly, contact whoever is officiating at the unveiling and provide them with the English (or Yiddish ) name of your father. They can provide you with an official name.

Once you get the name, I suggest, in addition to putting it on the stone, that you also keep it with your valuables.

Best Wishes,
