Question

We recently moved into an apartment in New York City where the elevator opens up into the apartment. Our question is where to hang our Mezuzah. Should it be on the right side or left side should it slant toward the elevator or away from the elevator? And finally on the door or next to the door?

Answer

Definitely place the mezuzah on the inside - on the outside it may be vandalized or worse. It is to be on the right side of the doorway as you enter the apartment. It should be placed within the upper third and attached diagonally with the upper end tilted toward the inside of the house/room. If the doorpost is insufficiently wide, then it may be fixed in a vertical position.

Mazal Tov again and enjoy the apartment.
Best Wishes,
