Question
I have recently bought a home from a non-Jew and will be moving in January. Do I affix the mezzuzah before or after I kasher the home? I plan on staying in the home during the painting, carpeting and kashering processes.
Answer
As soon as you take possession of the home and there is no danger of the
mezuzot being damaged, for example being painted over on the door-post as
the house is readied, put them up.
Remember that you should be purchasing mezuzot from a reliable Judaica
dealer - too many are selling paper, xerox copies, silk screen copies, etc.
When in doubt speak with your Rabbi for guidance.
In general, the mezuzah is placed on the right-side door-post on the way
into the house/room, at a 45 degree angle. Your Rabbi can provide the
appropriate berakha and give guidance on how many mezuzot you need beyond
all of the external doors. You don't put one on the door to inappropriate
places, e.g. bathroom.
