Question

My best friend's mother has died. I understand that it is the practice to serve the immediate family a meal of eggs and bread as their first meal after the burial. Since there are no family members in the area who will serve the bereaved after the funeral, I feel that I should. I am not Jewish, and I don't know much about what should be done. Can you give me an idea of what type of bread ( eg. unleavened, whole grain), and what should be done with the eggs? Thank you.

Answer

Thanks for writing and what a thoughtful friend you are.

Any bread that is marked kosher, preferably "pareve" as well is fine. The eggs can be even brought to the family and just hard-boiled there, and you will have performed the "traditional" gifts.

If and when there is a kosher - not kosher style - vendor in your community, they often will prepare a simple meal of a chiken, some vegetables, etc. for the family. Alternatively some smoked fish and veggies.

Hope this helps and bless you for your thoughtfulness

Best Wishes,
