Question

I recently converted to Judaism and I am now wondering if I can make Aliyah to the Holy Land. Somebody mentioned that I cannot make Aliyah since my conversion was not orthodox but Reform. Is that correct?

Answer

Conversion is a complicated and highly political business in Israel today.

For some conversions, there is indeed a legitimate question about the actual education and ritual process, whether it was according to Jewish law and tradition.

For other conversions, it is simply a political issue - with which movement does the officiating Rabbi identify and with which congregation or community will the new immigrant in Israel identify.

I'd suggest that you contact Rabbi Andy Sacks, Exec. Director for the Conservative / Masorti Rabbis in Israel and he can guide you knowing the situation on the ground.

Good luck and may you find a life filled with Jewish experiences and mitzvot wherever you live.

Best Wishes,
