Question
I am interested in the issue of whether a severely deaf person who is interested in converting to Judaism might expect to find any difficulties in his/her path relating specifically to the deafness.
Answer
Until
recently, Jewish law assumed that the deaf were incapable of comprehension - measured
in part by speech as opposed to signing. I'm speaking of the past 2000 years.
Today, however, I would imagine that the only difficulty would be to
find a teacher who is qualified Judaically and can also use sign language to teach
the person who wants to convert.
