Question

Can you suggest a suitable bracha (blessing) for those of use who use computers in our working life, depend on them and are in awe at how they work? I am grateful to HaShem for giving us the mental capacity to develop such things.

Answer

Thanks for writing and you raise an interesting issue: what objects deserve a berakha (blessing). The Catholic Church has a "blessing" for every thing, from sewing machines to power plants.

I am very uncomfortable with creating a blessing lest it be a berakha l'vatala (a vain blessing). And I don't wish to confuse ritual acts with profane acts. Continue the traditional blessings and, at the same, time don't lose your sense of awe of all that God has created, including human creativity and the world itself.

Best Wishes,

Rabbi Barry Dov Lerner
