Question

In less than a month we expect our fist baby. We know it's a girl. Both of us, like the name Leah. Though, when we checked it's Hebrew meaning, it translates as WEARY. Does the name's meaning affects the future character and life of a baby?

Answer

Mazal Tov and B'sha'ah Tovah. May all go well and in good health for mother and child.

To begin with, generally we Ashkenazim name after a deceased relative and it is her/his qualities that are being remembered, and not the general "meanings" of a name.

Secondly, Leah was a Matriarch, one of the four women and the two wives of Jacob who brought forth the 12 tribes of the People of Israel. What could be more glorious.

Thirdly, the Hebrew really referred to Lea's eyes, for she "wearied" of being married because her younger sister was so vital and beautiful. But, according to a prominent name dictionary, Leah was really named in Chaldees - not in Hebrew - and the Assyrian use of that name means "mistress" of the manor or "ruler." She was a princess or queen - precisely the role she played in the life of the Jewish people. I love the name and I hope that no matter what she is named you will see her as your princess!!
