Question
How can I make my daughter's naming ceremony special?
Answer
Here are some sources of ideas for your daughter's naming ceremony:
- View this overview of baby naming ceremonies for girls
- Read "The New Jewish Baby Book: Names, Ceremonies & Customs. A Guide for Today's Families" by Anita Diamant
- Ask your local rabbi to help you create a more personal, family, home-based ceremony.
- One way to make the ceremony more personal is to include readings based on the meanings of the names chosen in English and Hebrew.
- If the child was named after a family member, then various members of the family (and friends) can present memories of these relatives.
- Old photos, 8mm films, videos, etc. that provide memories of the family heritage can be shown. You could even make up a little booklet that your guests can take home.
- Psalms, which have the numerical value of the names given, can be read.
- You can have a calligrapher prepare a personalize naming certificate for the child, including illumination that addresses the child's family and heritage.
