Escape from Sobribor
Chat with Holocaust Survivor Toivi Blatt

"THE SOBIBOR REVOLT" > Page 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Susan says:

I find it deplorable that it was as dangerous among the locals as it was among the nazis

Host Toivi says:

Yes, it was true, the Nazis paid the local population with alcohol

Susan says:

it wasn't just general anti Semitism?

Host Toivi says:

Mostly, there was general anti-Semitism. The Jews were considered Christ-killers.

ZHL says:

Toivi, who portrayed you in the movie?

ZHL says:

were you the brother of that one boy?

Host Toivi says:

James Norman, the boy who lured the Nazis to their death

ZHL says:

the one who tried to sell the coats and boots? and reported to Leon all the time?

Host Toivi says:

Yes

ZHL says:

wow

Reut whispers to Lisa_Katz:

what is the name of the movie??

Host Lisa_Katz says:

The name of the movie is Escape from Sobibor.

Reut whispers to Lisa_Katz:

thanks

Susan says:

it was on the history channel a few weeks ago

Orin1 says:

several times

Host Lisa_Katz says:

Toivi, would you briefly describe the Sobibor Revolt for those who have not yet read the book or seen the movie.

Host Toivi says:

One day, our organization decided on a day to revolt. The plan had two phases: the first to kill all of the Nazis in an hour under pretences and then to open the revolt with weapons we had taken from the Nazis. We killed most of the staff and escaped.

MSS8 says:

At 15 you must have had some people try to stop you from joining the revolt, what were your motivations?

Host Toivi says:

About 5% of the prisoners were aware of the revolt plans; the rest were informed at the last seconds.

Susan says:

at the last seconds? wow

Host Lisa_Katz says:

okay, this is from SpaceCat: Why in the USA is there a hate movement by American Nazi groups toward Jewish people these days

Susan says:

how can anyone deny the holocaust happened?

ZHL says:

the Muslims preach that there was no Holocaust and that we made it up

BarbO says:

I heard someone say that while viewing the exhibits at the Holocaust Museum in D.C.!

Host Toivi says:

It is mostly jealousy, competition, and religious prejudice. Many consider Jews rich and do not see the poor one.

BarbO says:

Historically, Jews were able to read (for bar mitzvah) and thus became tax collectors -- not the most well liked of professions!

Susan says:

and Jews weren't allowed to own or work the land

Orin1 says:

that is why we should all have guns and know how to use them

Host Toivi thinks: Yes.

Host Lisa_Katz says:

Toivi, Pinny asks where you live now?

Host Toivi says:

I live in Seattle, Washington.

MSS8 says:

What are your thoughts on the recent 600 million offer by Swiss Banks?

Host Toivi says:

What offer is this? I only one I've heard about is for 32 million and we have not seen a cent of it.

Host Lisa_Katz says:

good question MSS, can you answer his question Toivi.

Host Toivi says:

I feel that the payback is far less than what was lost.

JustMe says:

its not enough, it will never be enough...nothing will repay what they went through

Susan says:

true

MSS8 says:

the offer has not been accepted at this point. It is being said that the amount is way to short.

Host Lisa_Katz says:

Toivi, do you plan to write more books?

Host Toivi says:

Now I am working on my life in America, a continuation of the second book.
