Sara Atzmon's Art Gallery
Facing the Alter, 1990

art_tn_facingthealtar.jpg (15243 bytes)In July 1944, we, the women, were standing outside the Strasshof-Camp, where we had been disinfected, some of us with shaved heads, some pregnant, some with bleeding feet and naked. I, myself, coming from a religious family, had been shocked by the sight of so large a number of naked bodies.

Later on, I asked: what will become of all these babies? Then I painted the pregnant woman and the rails of the train, riding over her body. So far, I did not succeed in expressing the gaze of the pregnant woman.
