Hostages, 1991
The last days of June,
1944, found us caged in the boxcars for a week. As we arrived at the Polish border,
my father fainted. It was hot and there was no water. My mother complained to the German
soldier who was guarding us about the inhuman conditions in which we were being kept.
The soldier pushed his rifle into the boxcar and yelled at us, "Don't tell anybody
that you are locked up!" He called his commander, with whom my mother tried to
negotiate. She handed him a silver cigarette case wrapped up in a handkerchief. When he
saw this, he gave us some water and a portion of bread.
