Sara Atzmon's Art Gallery
The Appel, 1990
Every morning, we had
to stand outside in the snow in Bergen-Belsen, clad very sparsely. This was particularly
hard on me, because I had one lady's shoe with a high heel on one foot, and a children's
shoe on the other foot. They counted us constantly, even those who were laying on the
ground. In case there was a mistake, we were counted again.
During the two years, I was hunted by these impressions. I did not want to paint
monotonously, putting figures upon figures. Instead, I wanted to convey the hardship, to
stand on our feet for hours and hours, Without being aware, I painted striped clothes,
horizontal, to create the impression of ribs looking like shields, to make the prayer
shawls and the phylacteries look like human figures.
