Argentine government corruption may be the reason that those responsible for the bombing attacks have gone unpunished.
Shortly after the bombing, Islamic Jihad - Iranian-backed Lebanese militants - claimed responsibility. The investigation then focused on Iranian complicity. The Argentine government announced that it had "convincing proof" of Iranian involvement in the bombing. General steps, such as expelling Iranian diplomats from the country, were taken. However, no action was taken to prosecute suspects and further investigation was stalled.
Systematic irregularities, the manipulation and disappearance of evidence, and vehement rejection of other investigative trials namely the Syrian trail of the attacks did not go unnoticed
A recent report, compiled by an Argentine political party called Accion por la Republica, accuses investigators of a cover-up. The report notes that the Argentine government investigation has ignored any possibility that sectors of the Syrian government could have been involved in the attack. Furthermore, the report proposes that the investigation has focused solely on Iranian complicity in order to deviate the attention of public opinion from any indication that will involve the former government with suspects of the attacks."
The report calls this intention to hide the truth of the events surrounding the attacks "Menemism" in honor of former Argentine President Carlos Menem. Menemism "has its origin in the very history of the last ten years, and especially in ... the illegal financing of the political campaign of 1989 and the dangerous unfulfilled promises to specific Arab countries for such an objective."
