Islamic Jihad and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ)

Islamic Jihad aspires to establish an Islamic Arab empire. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) is focused on destroying Israel as an initial, essential step toward fulfilling the goals of Islam.

In 1990, one of the organization's leaders -- Sheikh Tamimi, author of a 1982 booklet called "The Obliteration of Israel: A Koranic Imperative," -- said: "The Jews have to return to the countries from which they came. We shall not accede to a Jewish state on our land, even if it is only one village."

This group believes that the only way to resolve the conflict with the Israel is by direct, violent confrontation or holy war (jihad). They base their belief in jihad on verses from the Quran.

Because of its strong support for Israel, the United States has been identified as an enemy of the PIJ. In July 2000, the PIJ publicly threatened to attack US interests if the US Embassy was moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The PIJ group also opposes moderate Arab governments that it believes have been tainted by Western secularism.
