PFLP, PFLP-GC, PFL

Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)

Founded in 1967 by George Habash, this Marxist-Leninist group advocates PanArab revolution and the establishment of a secular democratic state in Palestine.

The PFLP aims to mobilize and lead the struggle of the Palestinian masses for the return to Palestine. This return to Palestine involves defeating the Zionist entity, liberating all of Palestine, and establishing a democratic Palestinian state with a democratic, socialistic society where all citizens enjoy equal rights, free from discrimination on the basis of race, sex, or religious belief.

After Fatah, the PFLP is the most important military and political organization in the Palestinian movement.

Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC)

In 1968, Ahmad Jibril, a former captain in the Syrian army, created a new group, the PFLP-GC. This new group splintered from the PFLP because it wanted to focus more on fighting and less on politics. The PFLP-GC has carried out numerous cross-border terrorist attacks into Israel using unusual means, such as hot-air balloons and motorized hang gliders.

Palestine Liberation Front (PLF)

In the mid-1970s, the PLF splintered from the PFLP-GC. The PLF is split into proPLO, proSyrian, and proLibyan factions. The proPLO Abu Abbas group is based in Iraq, openly supported Iraq in the Gulf War, and has been responsible for numerous terrorist attacks, including the 1985 attack on the Achille Lauro cruise ship in which U.S. citizen Leon Klinghoffer was murdered.
