Playing tricks on "Satan" and making candles with enchanted wicks is not something you would usually associate with the celebration of the Jewish High Holidays. But during the Middle Ages these were just two of the superstitious rituals that some Jews engaged in as part of their observance of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.
