What Do You Eat During Passover?

By April 4, 2010

Follow me on:

MatzahThe seders are over. The leftovers are gone. As Passover heads into its 6th day, I'm wondering:

  • Do you keep kosher for the entirety of Passover and if so, what are you eating?
  • Do you eat matzah during all of Passover or do you only eat it during your seders?

I'd love to hear your answers. After talking with folks this weekend and hearing everything from "I only keep kosher at the seders" to "I love eating matzah," it's clear that Passover manifests itself in many ways!

We actually keep kosher for all of Passover, although we’re not kosher any other time. We even have Passover dishes (the old, chipped hand-me-downs from my mom-in-law) and usually tape up the cabinets.

We spend the first 4 days or so eating leftovers. Then we eat “regular” things — protein and vegetables, nothing uniquely Passover. We have potatoes instead of rice or pasta, and finally quinoa (which I like but my family not so much). Lots of matzoh with either butter and salt, butter and honey (13-yr-old) or spread with soft cheese. My daughter makes a wicked-evil caramel-and-chocolate-covered-matzo. Yum. I gotta have cold borscht with sour cream.

I’m embarrassed to admit that I bought a second batch of chocolate jelly rings (not easy to find by this time!) and another Rye Ridge gefilte-fish loaf yesterday.

Then I went biking. Oy.

OMG, that all sounds so delicious. You’re making me hungry!! I love matzoh, but wish I could make it at home, as it’s so expensive in the store.

I’m with Beth when it comes to the chocolate and caramel covered matzah. I got the recipe years ago from my best friend’s mom and have made it every year since. Usually have to make 2 batches, 1 for the family seders and 1 batch for my wife and I to enjoy during the rest of the week. We also tend to go for lots more meat, salad and produce than we normally eat.
